George Mechels

George Mechels, 79, died Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center, following a courageous battle with cancer. George Edward Mechels was born March 6, 1932 on a farm north of Chancellor, the son of Ben and Tena (Kuper) Mechels. He grew up there and attended rural school. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. On November 18, 1955 he was united in marriage to Annis Braak at Germantown Manse. They farmed and lived on their farm north of Chancellor their entire 55 years of marriage. George was a life long member of Germantown Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a Deacon and was a member of Bertus-Jurgens American Legion Post #283. He was an avid Twins fan and, for many years, was an umpire for the church league fast pitch softball games. He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was preceded in death by his father on January 28, 1942; his mother on April 8, 1996 and one brother, Marvin Mechels on February 14, 1955. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Annis; his children: Diane (Dan) Olson, Carrollton,TX, Darren Mechels, Chancellor, Dudley (Lisa) Mechels, Manhattan, KS, Denton (Julie) Mechels, Harrisburg and Dalane (Jodi) Mechels, Lennox; 11 grandchildren: Kyle and Libby Olson, CarLee Mechels, Brooke and Brandon Mechels, Keegan, Halie and Sydney Mechels, Drew, Emma and Lily Mechels; brother: Luverne (Audrey) Mechels, Sioux Falls; sisters: Lois (Rev. George) Buchin, Baxter, MN and Betty Winesburg, Hartford; many other relatives and a host of friends. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at the Germantown Presbyterian Church, rural Chancellor, SD with burial to follow at the Germantown Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home, Lennox.
