Jon Severson, 51, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at the Avera Doughtery Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls following a courageous battle with cancer. Jon David Severson was born on November 2, 1960. His adoptive parents, Chet and Zona (Whalen) Severson called November 6, his “Chosen Day”, the day they picked him up from the hospital. He grew up in Lennox and graduated from Lennox High School in 1980. He went on to Southeast Technical School and received his degree in Automotive Technology. On April 4, 1981 he was united in marriage to Yvonne Vanderwerf at Lennox. The couple lived briefly in Sioux Falls before moving to Lennox. Jon continued to maintain his home in Lennox while teaching Aberdeen. Jon worked as a technician from 1982 to 2001 at Gary Cone Amoco, Vern Eide, Billions, Cal Cars Hyundai, Sioux City, IA and Instant Car Credit. In 2001 he received his teaching certificate and taught for two years in Lennox, seven years at Hub Area Technical School, Aberdeen and was currently teaching at the Career and Technical Education Academy in Sioux Falls. Jon’s students were extremely important to him and had won the state competition for Ford/AAA and Skills USA and were able to compete in both National Competitions in the spring. Jon was a member of First English Lutheran Church and had been a member of the Lennox Jaycees. He served on the Automotive Technology Board for Southeast Tech, was President of the SD Association for Career and Technical Education in the Trade and Industry Division and was also State Presidnet for the same organization. He was a Skills USA Advisor and assisted with the Boy Scouts in Lennox and Aberdeen. Jon enjoyed restoring antique tractors and loved old cars; he had an affection for Native American culture, horses and buffalo. Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Chet in 1999 and Zona in 2005. Grateful for having shared her life are his wife of 31 years, Yvonne; four children: Ashley (Troy) Gilman, Guyton, GA, Michelle Severson, Parker, Andrew Severson, Lennox and Miranda Severson, Lennox; one grandson Korbyn Gilman; brother, Jim (Roxanne) Severson, Lennox and biological brother, Gary Raap, Pierport, SD; mother-in-law, Marlys Vanderwerf, Sioux Falls as well as other relatives and host of friends. Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 at First English Lutheran Church, Lennox with burial in the Lennox Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home, Lennox with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m.
